A group of Gold Coast entertainers have teamed up with children’s charity Variety to raise much needed funds for an eleven-year-old.
The Sidesplitters two-hour show Music, Mirth and Magic will be staged on Sunday 11th July at the Albert Waterways Community Hall in Broadbeach.
Organisers hope to raise enough money to buy a motorised wheelchair for eleven-year-old Gold Coaster, Katelyn Rogers who has Cerebral Palsy and epilepsy.
The concert will feature some of the Gold Coast’s finest performers including internationally renowned illusionists, comedians and a cabaret-style songstress.
Concert organiser and Sidesplitter Arthur Coghlan said Katelyn needs support with everyday tasks and requires ongoing therapy.
“Katelyn has used a manual wheelchair to get around which greatly limits her mobility and level of independence,” Mr Coghlan said.
“We hope that the funds raised by the concert will enable us to purchase the motorised wheelchair for Katelyn and, possibly, similar items for other needy children,” he said
“All of the hugely-talented performers are offering their services free of charge to ensure all money raised will go directly to the beneficiaries.”

Sidesplitters began with a small bunch of friends from the Entertainment Industry gathering together at a local Gold Coast pub for an ale or three and swapping anecdotes about some of the funny stories and good times they experienced in their past careers………..That was way back in 1992 !
There were curious questions bandied around like “I wonder whatever happened to………?” and “Gee it was good to see……….again after all these years.” and “It was just like an ongoing conversation as if he had never gone away after all this time.”
Over time,without realising it, this small happy group were planting the seed for a much bigger scenario which today is known by many far and wide as the Sidesplitters Gold Coast and has a formidable reputation for a great deal of charitable work contributing to various Organisations in need.
Over the years, there have been some interesting characters come visit and liked what they saw…………Some stayed and joined the ever growing numbers and some were just passing through but have returned from time to time for yet another dose of “Mirth, Magic, Music and occasional Mayhem!!??”
Our first Patron was Max Bygraves that quintessential all round Entertainer from the U.K. who now calls Australia home and we’d like to think that we were responsible for one of his more well known titles ie. “Linga Longa Max.”
We were delighted when the founder of “Dracula’s” (Gold Coast and Melbourne) said yes to our invitation to be our second Patron…………..He is the popular, and indeed, highly respected John Newman from the famous “Newman Family.” bringing to Sidesplitters a wealth of Theatrical experience and an endless bunch of “true stories” that we all look forward to hearing for the first time……………A mark of his dedication to our Club is, even though he is domiciled in Melbourne, he flies in for our Luncheons to be with his Entertainer mates to “chew the fat” and it doesn’t get any better than that!
Sidesplitters proudly recognise some of its past and more famous Members in the ilk of: Syd Heylen Comedian and Actor from “A Country Practice” – Slim De Grey a fine Actor / Comedian credited with numerous Australian Movies – Lucky Grills well known for his regular comedy appearances on “Mike Walsh Show” “Don Lane Show” “IMT” etc etc., endless Pantomimes (Australia & U.K.) and no one would doubt his serious acting ability in “Bluey.” Hal Wayne one of the Pioneers of Television with his own Show “Cafe Continental,” Alan Heffernan the brains behind the “Lee Gordon Organisation” – Bill Newman anchor for Channel 9’s “Sound of Music.” – Darryl Stewart famous for his hit song “A Man Called Peter” etc etc…………..the list goes on………and there will be more added as the Newsletter gathers momentum.
It’s incredible to realise that Sidesplitters is nearing twenty years……….. WOW !! That celebration is going to be ONE BIG EVENT !! …….Click on Sidesplitters 2011
